Big hopes, pipe dreams, and wishful thinking. What’s your urban planning wish list for Edmonton? Please join us on June 21 for Taproot Edmonton’s very first event!
We’ve invited two members of the Taproot community to outline an audacious vision for the city:
- Ryan Stephens will discuss “Highline on the High Level,” a desire to transform the top deck of Edmonton’s most iconic bridge into a shared pedestrian/streetcar corridor;
- Michelle Taylor will discuss “Nature Bomb YEG,” a design competition to introduce natural elements to a well-travelled corridor such as Jasper Avenue (like yarn-bombing but with plants).
We have enlisted two experts — planner Erik Backstrom and architect Shafraaz Kaba — to talk about how to make such visions a reality, what might pose challenges, and some practical ways to at least make the idea behind the wish get a foothold.
In a way, you’ll be watching us do a Taproot story out loud in real time.
Then it’s your turn to share your urban planning wish. We’ll have a Lego station where you can build us your idea in 3D, if you’re so inclined. We’ll also have good old pen-and-paper on hand for the wishes that are a little harder to capture in blocks.
We’re hoping to gather your ideas and share them with the Taproot community. Who knows what might take root! If you don’t plant the seed, you’ll never find out.
The event takes place at the Sugar Swing Ballroom (10019 80 Ave.) on Wednesday, June 21. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and we’ll get underway at 7 p.m. There will be refreshments.
