In August/September 2017, we launched the #yegvote Microsite and companion Edmonton Election Update email newsletter. The goal was to bring all the latest election-related news and other information together into one easy-to-follow place.
We combined open data from the City with other data that we collected to build the election microsite. Readers could browse the full list of candidates, all the wards and voting stations, a list of election-related events, and a list of election-related news articles.
Prior to Election Day, readers could use the Election Guide to find their wards, candidates, voting station, and more simply by entering their address or clicking the “Locate Me” button. On Election Night, the results dashboard provided real-time updates on every race, total voter turnout, and other interesting data points, such as the incumbents being defeated and the most supported candidates.
Edmonton Election Update
The first edition of our weekly election email newsletter was published on August 23, 2017. The format generally followed 2-3 “feature” items, followed by a list of other headlines and upcoming events. The final edition was published on October 18, 2017, just two days after the election.
