Do you want to contribute to a new future for local journalism? We’re looking for engaged Edmonton-based freelancers to help us build what comes next in local media.
Taproot Edmonton is looking for freelance curators to help produce our roundups, which are curated email newsletters about local topics of interest. Our current lineup provides coverage of business, city council, food, health innovation, media, music, and tech.
As a curator, you’ll apply your interest in a topic, your ability to determine what’s new, relevant, and interesting, and your skills in explaining the news to save readers time and keep them informed.
Roundup curators are responsible for:
- Paying ongoing attention to a local topic and aggregating content that may be of interest from a variety of sources;
- Selecting one or two lead items, along with a photo;
- Selecting five to 10 headlines, upcoming events for the week ahead, and other sections as appropriate;
- Filing a draft email using MailChimp the day before publication.
You’ll collaborate with our team via Slack, and we’ll help to facilitate your curatorial effort.
We currently pay $50 per roundup edition, with plans to increase that as funds allow. Our experience indicates that paying close attention leads to good questions, so you’ll get first dibs on pitching stories for your beat. We currently pay $500 per story.
